The blue colouring in Orpingtons is the result of a dilution gene working on black pigment. The result is the beautiful slate-blue you see in our birds — with lacing (a darker edging to each feather) that adds visual depth. It is not a fixed colour: breeding Blue Orpingtons together produces a mix of outcomes.

Breeding Genetics — What to Expect

• Blue x Blue produces approximately: 50% Blue, 25% Splash, 25% Black offspring
• Blue x Black produces approximately: 50% Blue, 50% Black offspring
